ABSTRACT
Courtship may be usefully defined as the time spent in “wooing,” in securing sexual prefer ence; and manifest behavior during such court ship is sexual in nature and in competition. These then frame the contents of our essay. Further, because we are D rosophila behavior geneticists, we obsess with insects so that, for us, drosophilids represent bags of genes that are predictive of a whole fascinating spectrum of the genetics of courtship behavior. Here, we shall also consider the development of court ship sexual behavior in fish, in dogs, and in birds, as befits a contribution to comparative psychology.
