ABSTRACT
Aggression has traditionally been viewed as a behavior that causes dispersal. This idea was mainly based on experience with territorial spe cies, in which losers of aggressive incidents tend to avoid winners. In a variety of group-living species, however, former opponents often come together following a fight and exchange reassur ance and appeasement signals. Such reunions have been labeled “reconciliations,” to empha size their socially reparative function.
