ABSTRACT

For any tourism destination, local heritage resources are among the major visitor attractions. Many urban destinations understand the importance of heritage resources for tourism development and are seeking ways to maintain and protect them while dealing with the many issues facing urban administrations. It is difficult to allocate scarce financial resources to the restoration and rehabilitation of heritage buildings, especially when city residents face a number of other urgent problems, such as access to clean water, reliable solid waste management, and low-cost public transportation. The chapter on destination management discusses these issues in detail.
