ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Many large research libraries’ cataloging departments struggle con-
stantly with a cataloging backlog. Because of the emphasis on cataloging currently-received materials, presumably of greater interest in current research, those cataloging departments often find it difficult to find the time and resources to participate in special cataloging projects. Often, retrospective conversion projects do not happen unless outside funding is identified and earmarked for the project, and special staff are often hired to pursue those projects. Similarly, recataloging or reclassification projects are difficult to find time for, as it’s difficult to justify spending time on materials that have at least some access in the online catalog when there are other materials that have no access whatsoever, or when there are current receipts waiting to be processed.
