ABSTRACT
No party leader wishes to face the circumstances described immediately above
by the frustrated leader of the Czech Social Democrats, when they as a
government party could not agree on a candidate for president to be chosen
by parliament. The result was the election of the candidate of the major oppo-
sition party. Resignation was the immediate response of the leader to the open
expression of disunity in his party.
