ABSTRACT

John heads the non-tenure track faculty subcommittee of the academic senate and has been tasked with developing recommendations for contingent faculty at his liberal arts college. The campus has some part-time faculty and a growing number of full-time non-tenure track faculty. From conversations with non-tenure track faculty colleagues in different disciplines, he has realized they all have very different concerns and needs. He is perplexed where to start. In fact, he feels fairly paralyzed as if there is no common ground from which to start tackling the issue. He consulted a few reports on non-tenure track faculty issues, but they seemed more focused on community colleges and he is not sure how well the recommendations will apply to his campus. He calls a few colleagues at peer institutions who offer a few ideas, but mostly they express that they are similarly confused. John really is not sure how to proceed.
