ABSTRACT

Emerging from the amalgamation of three pre-existing institutions, Vancouver Community College (VCC) was founded in 1965. It is the largest and oldest public college in Vancouver, British Columbia (BC), Canada. Vancouver Community College offers more than 140 programs and serves nearly 25,000 students a year (see Table 3.1). The Vancouver Community College Faculty Association (VCCFA) was originally certified as a trade union in 1951. It represents faculty, librarians, and counselors at VCC and currently has about 730 faculty on its seniority list. The VCC/VCCFA collective agreement has become recognized across North America as exemplary in its equitable treatment of all faculty, whether full-time or part-time, permanent/regular, or probationary/ contingent. Through bargaining and vigorous contract administration, the VCCFA has successfully institutionalized change for all faculty at VCC. For the great majority of faculty—be they full-time, part-time, librarian, counselor, teacher, or curriculum developer—being treated either equally or equitably is the norm.
