ABSTRACT

The preceding chapters have discussed the theoretical underpinnings of crisis and conflict communication, alongside the importance of a clear and well understood negotiation strategy. This has focused upon the goals and techniques of the negotiation process, and key considerations for the negotiator and other individuals involved in the management of the situation. Following such clear underpinnings, the importance of flexibility in the negotiation process can be paramount. This is of particular relevance when a negotiator and associated team are faced with other factors that may influence the outcome of the negotiation process. Such factors may impact upon its consequent potential for successful resolution. Such factors may include the mental health of the individual or issues of cognitive impairment (for example, as a result of an acquired brain injury). As such, this chapter will focus upon some of the considerations in regard to negotiations when an individual presents as mentally ill and/or has issues with cognitive impairment.
