ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the potential impact of the evolving theories relating to antenarrative, story, and narrative (as defined by Boje, 2008, p. 7) that challenge traditional ways of solving organizational problems. It considers how we can make use of the outputs of antenarrative processes, and how, in conjunction with more traditional narrative processes, the improved generation and selection of pragmatic, credible, and engaging solutions might be facilitated. The less structured, more creative contribution that antenarrative thinking can make to problem solving is investigated. Finally, the possibility of using story dispersion in conjunction with narrative coherence to improve the chances of ‘guessing right’ when we attempt to make decisions that impact on the future of our organizations is considered, along with implications for academics and practitioners.
