ABSTRACT

Blogs, wikis, and e-portfolios are becoming familiar learning and teaching tools, and social networking websites including Facebook and multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) such as Second Life are being explored for their educational potential for language learning (Deutschmann, Panichi, & Molka-Danielsen, 2009; Levy, 2009; Thorne, Black, & Sykes, 2009). These emerging technologies enable access to authentic materials and interaction with native speakers for developing language and intercultural competence. They can also be used for development and assessment of learning competencies (“learning to learn”), including problem solving, critical analysis, refl ection, and collaborative learning, central to lifelong autonomous learning (Levy, 2007; Murray, 2005).
