ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to describe and compare the schooling experiences of high-achieving Puerto Rican urban students with those of high-achieving Moroccan students schooled in Flanders, Belgium. We were inspired to conduct this line of inquiry because we could not help but notice a huge gap in the educational research regarding the schooling experiences of urban Latina/o youth. This gap consisted of an overemphasis regarding the underachievement of urban youth of color at the expense of describing the schooling experiences of high-achieving urban youth of color. In other words, stories of academic success were largely invisible. Hence, we began a quest to fi ll this notable gap in the research literature, which resulted in a number of publications that were paid considerable attention by some sectors of the research, teacher educator, and educational policy-making communities (Antrop-González, Vélez, & Garrett, 2004, 2005, 2007).
