Chronologically, we make a fourfold division of our subject:—
Classical period.
Middle ages.
Georgian period; commencing from the beginning of the XVIIIth century to the first quarter of the XIXth century (1700 A.D. to about 1825 A.D.).
Modern times; commencing from the second quarter of the XIXth century to the present day.
