ABSTRACT

Our purpose in this book is to reclaim reading from corporations and politicians whose profit-driven motives and oversimplified views of the reading process, reading instruction, and reading research have resulted in teachers and children being forced into ineffective, inappropriate, and sometimes damaging programs. We will not document or reiterate the reading tragedies that have occurred in the past ten years. Instead, we look forward as we present specific research and teaching strategies that support teachers’ and children’s struggles to reclaim reading during oppressive times.
