ABSTRACT

Middle school students are passionately curious about who they are and who they might become. Their peer relationships are keys to their worlds, values, and dreams. We invited a group of middle school students to reflect on their social experiences at school and to share their insights with others. We set up parameters that would ensure that all students engaged in reading, writing, photography, and development of a final display. In addition, we created learning engagements that highlighted the value of collaborating with others. We chose the question What is the social and emotional climate of our school? and the primary method of sharing (large display panels with photographs and text), but the content was shaped by the students.
