ABSTRACT

As we read and reread the chapters and extensions in this book, even as various initiatives were being issued from state and federal legislatures, we found ourselves immersed in discussions of joy. We relished the chance to dig deeply into Ken and Yetta Goodman’s theory and engage intellectually in a conversation about how reading works. We wondered at the brilliance evident in the examples of children’s and family members’ transactions with texts in so many of the chapters. And we wanted to cheer for the many stories of teachers accomplishing what they know to be best for children (and themselves) throughout this book.
