ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a multidimensional view of ethics that can guide the decisions, policies, and activities of educators and the learners as they engage the school’s threefold curricula of academics, personal growth, and citizenship. 3 The chapter carries the burden of being theoretical enough to provide a grounding in ethical theory for the community of educators whose academic background in ethics may be rather thin, and yet is sufficiently focused on the educating context to connect the theory to their practice. What is presented here, therefore, is not ethical theory for ethical theorists (though it is sufficiently theoretical to reflect a grounding in mainstream scholarship), but an ethical theory for educational practitioners. This will provide a large framework for subsequent chapters to delve into its application to the educational enterprise.
