ABSTRACT

Singing is not only potentially one of the most powerful experiences to participants and audience alike, it is also one of the most natural and universal activities in the world. This chapter will consider the important question of how we get all children to engage with singing and how this needs to become an integrated and embedded part of the life of the school. The term ‘singing’ will be used in this chapter to include all aspects of vocal work. By the end of this chapter we will have considered the following issues particularly in the context of whole class instrumental and vocal teaching (WCIVT):

engagement; ● making vocal work accessible to all pupils; ● the importance of a whole school approach.
