ABSTRACT

Edward Hanin, MD, a member of the Association for Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists (AGLP), has had an outstanding and distinguished career in American psychiatry, and particularly within the American Psychiatric Association (APA) where he has served in many important positions. He was President (1978–1979) of the Westchester District Branch (DB) of the APA and later that DB's Representative to the APA Assembly (1981–1984). He was Vice President (1984–1986) and then President (1986–1988) of the New York State Psychiatric Association, simultaneously serving as the Deputy Area Representative to the APA Assembly from New York State (Area II), then Area II's Representative to the APA Assembly. He was later elected by the APA Assembly to be its Recorder (1988–1989) and then Speaker of the Assembly (1990–1991). He chaired APA's Council on National Affairs (1996–1999), the Psychiatric News Editorial Advisory Board (1991–2000), and the Joint Commission on National Affairs (1991–1994).
