ABSTRACT

The vignette establishes the significant role of the teacher in Jewish culture: teaching is so enriching that no matter in what other work they engage, teachers are enriched as a result of their teaching. Teacher educators and researchers must continue to work collaboratively with teachers to involve them in their own research to understand the ways in which the results of research impact literacy instruction. During collaborations with miscue researchers, we realized the power of what we were learning about the reading process, and the impact of this knowledge on reading instruction. Since most of us had been classroom teachers, we discussed what we would have done differently if we had known as teachers what we were now learning as reading researchers. If we work together with greater understanding about the roles we each play—teachers, teacher educators and researchers—we come to know that long-lasting change can only take place in classrooms that value and support the work of the teacher.
