ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the presence and process of triangles and interlocking triangles in response to anxiety and their impact on the functioning of a family business. Efforts to modify this process using Bowen theory (Bowen, 1978) are presented. The problems and possibilities of collective leadership in a family business are illustrated through a case study in which three brothers share ownership and management of a business. In the case presented here, during the course of the consultation, the two younger brothers came to collectively lead the family business with their older brother. That outcome was possible because the three sibling partners worked to be responsible individuals, each providing leadership as part of a team.
