ABSTRACT

The U.S. Constitution is a guide that has offered generations of Supreme Court justices the opportunity to interpret principle in relation to the challenges of the times. The interpretation of this document reveals how differently justices think and hence interpret the meaning of the Constitution. Some justices defend their positions based on what our forefathers would have done, others try to interpret what our forefathers meant when they wrote it, and others seem to have more flexibility in adjusting the Constitution to the needs of the day or, as they put it, the felt necessities of the times. 1 There are a limited number who come to the Court with a vision of what might be and lead the court to utilize the principles of the document, rather than focusing on the content at hand.
