ABSTRACT

This chapter describes an emotionally focused activity that can be utilized when a therapist is conducting couple therapy. The purpose of this activity is for a couple to identify and distinguish their emotions within their relationship and to delve into the emotions that are generally not shared in a relationship. In order to help a couple explore and identify these emotions, the activity educates the couple about secondary versus primary emotions (Johnson, 2004). Primary emotions are biologically based and are usually our first responses to a situation. Secondary emotions are built on primary emotions and involve more thought and interpretation. They are the emotions more readily shown and expressed (Johnson, 2004).
