ABSTRACT

Depression has been described as a blue mood, a deep hole, a dark tunnel, and countless other analogies in an effort to capture the dark emotion that is the hallmark of depression. The commonalities among all these descriptions are aloneness or emptiness and an intense sense of sadness that has a perceived suffocating grip. Depression has a way of making its victim start to believe that there is no way out, that no one could possibly understand, and that there is something fundamentally flawed that is beyond repair. This belief, if unchecked, can even lead to suicide. For those who are struggling with depression, there is often the belief that there is no point of looking beyond the depression. It is for this very reason that Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is such a powerful approach to working with those who are afflicted with depressive symptoms. SFBT offers the very hope and future vision that is frequently lost by those who struggle with this condition.
