ABSTRACT

There are nearly 5,000 colleges and universities in the United States; 1 two percent of them are defined by Congress as “Historically Black Colleges and Universities” (HBCUs). HBCUs had to have been founded before 1964, with the principal mission to educate African-American students. 2 Like women’s colleges that once played the primary role in educating female leadership in the country, historically black colleges have a long tradition of educating large numbers of African-American leaders. 3
