The Hausa wanderer and structural outsiderhood: an emic and etic analysis

This paper analyses a category of mobility which the Hausa of northern Nigeria view as improper or illegitimate (Olofson 1976). The ‘walk to Dandi’ (yawon Dandi) refers to the movement of Hausa to lands outside Hausaland in areas of the Hausa diaspora, or to cosmopolitan centres beyond the walls of the ancient Hausa cities.
