Monday through Th ursday at 3:30 P.M., just aft er classes were dismissed and before leaving for the day, students usually dropped by the 11th-grade classroom where Meyer would have posted a note on the bulletin board right inside the door. Just to check. Scrawled on a bit of yellow paper, usually ripped from someplace else, would be a word or a phrase: “On Liberty,” “C2H5-O-H; C2H5O-C2H5; C2H3O-H; C2H3O-O-C2H3O,” “Mondrian,” “Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny,” “Simone de Beauvoir,” or, “Hunger.” Th is was the subject.
