ABSTRACT
There is a famous story about the ancient Greek forces intending to expand their
influence and power. When they arrived at the borders of their territory, they
met unknown, unintelligible people who only produced sounds similar to
“ba…ba…ba.” So the ancient Greeks called them “Barbarians.” Herodotus in
his “Historiae” (about 450 B.C.; 1926) also mentions that the ancient Egyptians,
upon meeting people that did not speak their language, called them “barbarous.”
