ABSTRACT
One of Peter MacNeilage’s early contributions is a seminal paper entitled
“Motor control of serial ordering in speech” (MacNeilage 1970). It offers a
critical review of work on speech production seen in the broader context of non-
speech motor mechanisms. The topics highlighted include the physiological
nature of speech units. In particular, the article considers the status of “spatial
targets” and the possibility that the goals specified by control commands are
articulatory in nature.
