ABSTRACT

The particular aspect of women’s roles on which this paper focuses is the use which women make of their time. Time use is of interest here because it may influence and be influenced by demographic characteristics of the population, particularly fertility. The available statistical evidence will be examined to see what light it throws on theories of fertility in which time and the value of time play an important part. The paper concludes by suggesting a number of hypotheses about the relationship between time use and fertility which should be tested in further research.
