ABSTRACT
As in the war that resulted in the break-up of Yugoslavia, armed conflicts and wars in Africa have a sad reputation for using sexual violence as a so-called weapon of war. Notably in Burundi, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Darfur, and Congo, there has been an epidemic of gender-based violence (GBV) (‘In their own words’, Forced Migration Review 2007: 47).2
