ABSTRACT
Derman-Sparks and the ABC Taskforce’s seminal book The Anti-Bias Curriculum: Tools for Empowering Young Children, was published in 1989. In 2010 the much-anticipated revised edition, Anti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves by Derman-Sparks and Edwards was issued. Thus it is a fi tting time to examine the state of early childhood multicultural education in the United States. According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), early childhood education covers infants from birth through age 8. Children in this age group are served in a variety of settings, from family child care and nannies, to Head Start programs, community-based centers, and public school early childhood programs. In the fi eld people who work with young children are variously called childcare providers, childcare workers, caregivers, teachers, and paraprofessionals (Neugebauer, 1999). In this chapter these names will be used interchangeably to describe people who work with children from birth to 8 years old.
