ABSTRACT

Located along the South China coast, Hong Kong was a British colony for over 150 years. Having such a long history of British colonial rule, Hong Kong’s polity, economy, society, and culture were quite different from China. However, in 1984 Great Britain suddenly announced that it would return the sovereignty of Hong Kong to China. In 1997 Hong Kong formerly ended its colonial relationship with Great Britain and became a special administrative region of China. Since then, Hong Kong has experienced rapid integration with China economically, socially, and culturally.
