ABSTRACT
The pace of change in healthcare technologies and policies means that the physical infrastructure that supports health services has to be adaptable to new needs. In the UK, the hospital building programme in the 1960s and 1970s paid great attention to the development of design and construction solutions that promoted adaptability. This was backed by an institutional framework to enable rational planning at regional and local levels.
