ABSTRACT

In the context of globalization and the new economy, the problem of governance in higher education has gained prominence, as governments, universities, and other societal actors face new challenges. This chapter examines the challenges facing university leaders and administrators in the context of the massification of higher education and its diversification, the rise of accountability, revenue streams, and the professionalization of management. Dealing mainly with the internal management of universities-not with the governance of higher education systems-involves relationships with government authorities and stakeholders, the governance roles of faculty and students, the nature of executive power and the attributes of an effective leadership team, the connection between strategic planning and organizational structure, the management of faculty, and the modern concept of audit and control.
