ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the management of reward – including the management of pay and benefits at work – as one of the key levers in the delivery of strategic human resource management (Storey, 1993). The objective of the chapter is to open up further discussion of reward management within the construction industry. It is a topic that has been relatively neglected within the construction literature yet it is a vital ingredient in project delivery, in attracting and retaining high calibre employees and in ensuring that a committed and skilled workforce remains in place for today's project and is available as a resource for the future.
