ABSTRACT
The story of the Chinese engineer is different from that of judicial, medical, religious, and journalistic professionals – to name but a few of the modern professions to emerge in China. Lawyers, judges, doctors, priests, and writers all had ambitions for professional autonomy; and all would find themselves severely limited by the controlling determination of the Guomindang and Communist party-states.
