ABSTRACT

This volume is a collection of essays on the professions and professionalism in China, initially presented at a conference on 28-30 January 2005 at Harvard Law School, and then revised for publication. The organizing idea of the conference was to bring together distinguished scholars from the United States and China-most of them experts on contemporary China and others with expertise on professionalism-who could address the current state of affairs in a wide variety of occupational groups. Accordingly, the topics of the chapters include law, health care, accounting, architecture, engineering, public administration, journalism, the clergy, and business management. Together they offer the first sustained examination in print of the professions and professionalism in China.
