ABSTRACT

For this interview survey we first prepared preliminary questions, based on the assumptions about the president’s decision-making capacity, decision-making process, etc., as described earlier in my book. This battery of questions was revised after a pre-test on 9 presidents in different sections of Japanese industry. Then we interviewed 64 presidents out of 130 electric equipment manufacturing firms listed on both the Tokyo and Osaka Securities Exchanges, using the same list of 42 questions during a 9-month period from June 1970 to February 1971. Interviews were conducted with one president by two or three interviewers with recordings made by all the interviewers to prevent mistakes. On the average an interview lasted one hour and a half.
