The Oil Crisis Opens Eyes The oil crisis of the autumn of 1973 first led the public to take a strong interest in the Toyota production system. Anyway you look at it, the oil crisis had a great influence on government and industry, and even on personal lifestyles. The following year, the Japanese economy slid down to zero growth, and all of a sudden the entire industrial sector seemed to plunge into a profound panic.
