ABSTRACT

Ken Saltman and I conceived this collection as an effort to shed light on recent initiatives within and around schools to enforce the population’s obedience to corporatist ideals and its loyalty to the state. As evidenced by George W. Bush’s post-September 11 call for our return to normalcy, chief beneficiaries and apologists of market societies typically conflate these two goals. Being good citizens, as Bush told us, means being good consumers-investing our energies in the production and consumption of goods and services from the market for “the good of our country.”
