ABSTRACT

For much of human history, the idea that there is a relationship between creativity and psychopathology has been widely accepted despite the fact that there is no conclusive evidence to that effect. I will briefly review some of the psychoanalytic positions on this subject in order to show that there is in fact a relationship between inspiration and insanity based on the common factor of dissociation that they both share. I will then present my own theory of creativity that identifies dissociation as an integral part of the creative process.
