ABSTRACT

In Greek mythology, Mnemosyne (Memory) is the mother of the Muses, the nine Greek goddesses whose role it is to inspire artists to create. The personification of inspiration and its connection with memory is in keeping with the theme of this work, and a fitting beginning to the chapter on witnessing. The Muse as conceptualized here is an imaginary other who exists in the space between inner and outer experience; it is an embodied image that serves a mirroring, echoing, and admiring function for the creator of works of art. Usually the Muse is seen as a female, which is the likely connection with the early mother who has the power to inspire and admire.
