ABSTRACT

For persons with entrenched patterns of violence, the assessment, prediction, and treatment/ management of the violent behaviors are the three major links essential in their rehabilitation, the goal of which is to reduce their risk of violence and, consequently, societal violence. e underlying assumptions of this approach are that assessment, which identies the causes of violence that are dynamic or changeable, in combination with interventions and treatments, can reduce the likelihood violence. ere is now an extensive literature documenting the ecacy of behavioral interventions to reduce general and violent recidivism (see McGuire, 2008, for a recent review). It follows that violence risk assessment and prediction should be considered as no more than the prelude for a general violence reduction strategy.
