ABSTRACT

Despite the variety of theoretical models underlying clinical work in the area of family therapy, there is no generally accepted framework within which to perform family assessment and treatment. The diversity of models can sometimes lead to an undisciplined approach to treatment just when it is most important for those treating families to be clear and consistent about the conceptual frameworks they use. The origins of the PCSTF 1820 were conceived when Epstein and a colleague had previously worked together at McGill but had not observed each other's work with families for some years. While reviewing videotapes of each other doing family therapy, clear differences were observed with respect to the minor moves and interventions they both made. This was not the case for the major steps they followed which were strikingly consistent. Both therapists followed the same sequence of major steps that Epstein and colleagues labeled as the macro stages of therapy.
