ABSTRACT

A basic theme of the McMaster approach is linking the clinical utility of the model with its research and teaching applicability. Following this principle, we developed assessments that empirically measure key constructs of the McMaster model. The Family Assessment Device (FAD), 13 36 the McMaster Clinical Rating Scale (MCRS), 37 and the McMaster Structured Interview of Family Functioning (McSiff) 38 were developed by our research team to be used by clinicians, researchers, students, and paraprofessionals. In this chapter we present descriptions and scoring for each of these instruments, discuss the rationale behind their development and give examples of how they may be used as clinical, research, or teaching tools.
