ABSTRACT

Goodman’s Transactional Sociopsycholinguistic Theory of the Reading process is an integral theory of proficient reading that has been developed, refined, and continuously updated during the last 40 years. It has been controversial because it challenges common sense perceptions of reading that are centuries old. In this chapter I do not directly deal with the political or controversial aspects; instead I relate how his theory has positively informed, influenced, and impacted the development of literacy and biliteracy pedagogy, thereby creating proficient biliterate children.
