U.S. carrier and one European carrier. The merger of Air France and KLM triggered a consolidation of the global alliances, leaving three major alliance groups – Star Alliance, oneworld, and Sky Team. Each of these alliances includes major carriers from Europe, Asia, and North America. According to Wan et al. (2009), the three major alliance groups now account for over three-quarters of the world’s aviation market based on revenue passenger-kilometers flown.2
