Commentary—On Expectations and Transition: Seeing Things on Their Own Terms

Expectations are a peculiar kind of endeavor. We examine a phe-nomenon, interpret what we fi nd with what we hope are systematic, grounded, and detached assumptions, and then try to fi t those fi ndings to our expectations. What we expect and anticipate, however, is often not what we fi nd. Yet nowhere in our research endeavors do we make place for unrequited expectation.
