ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the analysis of qualitative data – data that do not take the form of numbers and therefore cannot be analyzed directly using statistics. The most common forms of qualitative data are words (fi eld notes, interview transcripts and recordings, documents and so on) or images (photos, drawings, video). Analysis of images such as photographs, video footage or participatory maps is beyond the scope of this book; for more advanced texts on this subject see the list of further reading at the end of this chapter. Data in the form of words are the focus of this chapter.
