ABSTRACT

Three important differences between a thesis and a consultancy report relate to the audience you are writing for, the way in which they are likely to use the report, and the kind of information they are likely to be looking for. The principal audience for a thesis are the examiners, who should know something about the broad subject area and should read the thesis from cover to cover (except perhaps the appendices). In addition to the reported information they will be looking for evidence that you know the literature, understand the principles of research design and the methods you have used, and are able to analyze the data and interpret the results appropriately. Do not be tempted to try to cover up any methodological weaknesses; your examiners probably read many theses each year and they will spot them without your help. Provided that you demonstrate that you understand the problems, you can still get good marks.
